The origin of NORDUnet is collaboration within and among the Nordic countries, and NORDUnet exist to expedite such collaboration into the future. A strategy for NORDUnet is therefore a strategy for both NORDUnet as an organization as well as a strategy for the collaboration of NORDUnet and the Nordic NRENs. We set goals jointly, and we reach them together.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

NORDUnet\u2019s ambition is that we are recognised as the best international collaborators in the world, deliver a world-class technology platform for the knowledge sector, and actively enhance the digitalization of research and education for the benefit of the Nordic countries.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>

By realizing this ambition, an active Nordic community can jointly support world-class research and education and ensure long-term relevance of NRENs with expanding roles. We position ourselves to take advantage of global opportunities and be resilient in the face of geopolitical changes.\"\"<\/p>

NORDUnet\u2019s strategic focus is to be a trusted and agile partner with relevant competencies and skills, to have an organizational structure that supports the Nordic collaboration, and who understands the technology drivers in relevant sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We focus on leading with ideas and action, on influencing decision makers, and on driving the evolution of key European e-Infrastructures and services. We will exploit all our Nordic strengths, and support communities and joint actions to achieve leadership. To achieve our goals together, we will be mindful of developing the culture of both NORDUnet as well as the Nordic NREN collaboration culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We will drive evolution of intercontinental connectivity at a large scale and be instrumental in supporting European consensus on infrastructure for research and education. We will engage with users in close collaboration with NRENs, support and coordinate joint projects, and ensure the delivery of relevant services and service procurement for the community while maintaining the highest level of security.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

NORDUnet have five strategic priorities for 2024-2028 \u2013 areas that we will give extra attention and where we will develop our skills, our organisations, and our partnerships, to realise our ambition.<\/p>

The NORDUnet strategy sets out a long-term ambition for the NORDUnet organisation and the Nordic NRENs. The strategic priorities above are the key areas in which we will spend effort to further develop the organisation and the collaboration.

\u201cWe have clear Nordic direction towards joint goals\u201d <\/em><\/strong>is the 2025 strategic goal for NORDUnet and the collaboration of the Nordic NRENs. To reach that goal, we have set out three high-level strategic objectives for the year, as outlined below.<\/strong><\/p>

Delivering world-class infrastructure, being part of the digital transformation of the knowledge sector and achieving best in class collaboration demand commitment from both NORDUnet and NRENs, and it requires strong leadership to enable collaboration to flourish.<\/p>

Build AI maturity to advance digitalisation: <\/strong>NORDUnet and Nordic NRENs have in the past few years experimented with AI and AI-tools in a number of areas. The adoption of AI, the areas of applications, and the focus for AI in the future will be quite diverse. In 2026, NORDUnet together with the NRENs will undertake activities focused at increasing the maturity of both AI capabilities in the organisations and the approach to its application in a range of areas from infrastructure supporting AI, to impact on NORDUnet and NREN services and ways of working.<\/p>

Increase Operational Readiness in response to global changes: <\/strong>In 2025 we focused on increased organisational maturity through improved processes, compliance, and clarity. In 2026 we will continue this evolution, working closely with the Nordic NRENs to be ready to meet new challenges and requirements. NORDUnet\u2019s and the Nordic NRENs\u2019 network and services are increasingly being seen as critical infrastructures and must be prepared for new threats, while expectations of uptime, resilience, sovereignty, control, and capacity continue to grow. Only by working together to effectively leverage our common Nordic strengths can we meet these new requirements.<\/p>

Platform for Nordic Collaboration to facilitate joint value creation: <\/strong>NORDUnet is a vehicle for joint action by the Nordic NRENs. In 2026 we will continue to facilitate NREN collaboration. NORDUnet and the NREN\u2019s will explore working closer together on service and network operations than today. Development of infrastructure for new network applications could be accelerated through Nordic collaboration. We will all benefit from joint direction in network design and engineering. The Nordic NRENs should prospect working together in new and broader areas. We will probe these and other areas of collaboration, experiment with suitable collaboration models, and expand the ways NORDUnet can create value by leveraging Nordic strengths<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We have unified Nordic understanding of future organisational <\/span>capabilities<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>

Future<\/span>–<\/span>ready service delivery:<\/span><\/strong> NORDUnet is taking on new types of services, with new <\/span>
customers<\/span>. We will be a service provider with the EC as a customer for EOSC services delivered <\/span>for the benefit of all <\/span>European <\/span>researchers, funded through a <\/span>European <\/span>procurement. <\/span>We have <\/span>growing demands for service procurements and must find scalable and reliable way<\/span>s<\/span> to deliver <\/span>them for the community. <\/span> We <\/span> will<\/span> meet demands arising from the digital transformation of <\/span>education<\/span> and <\/span>pilot new <\/span>real<\/span>–<\/span>time collaboration tools<\/span> and <\/span>o<\/span>ther <\/span>educational services to explore the future of such services as well as to understand future service delivery models. Future-proofing services delivery and the ability to meet customer demands is key to staying relevant in the R&E area.<\/span><\/p>

Increased European Impact:<\/strong> European leadership and driving the evolution of European R&E networking is a key element in the NORDUnet strategy. We want the Nordic NREN community to develop solutions for the future, and we want to bring these solutions out in the world through European collaboration. To do so, we will further develop Polar Connect, drive trust and identity\u00a0initiatives such as the AARC3 project, engage with stakeholders in student mobility and campus digital transformation, expand engagement with research communities for optical fibre sensing, and facilitate European adoption of Nordic project ideas.<\/p>

Optimizing the organisation for the future<\/span>:<\/span> <\/strong>This is a mostly internal<\/span>–<\/span>focus<\/span>ed<\/span> objective. <\/span>The <\/span>NORDUnet<\/span> organisation is <\/span>already <\/span>lean and efficient. As the NORDUnet ambition grow and the<\/span> expectations of our stakeholders change, we must keep the organisation fit<\/span>–<\/span>for<\/span>–<\/span>purpose. <\/span>We must <\/span>be ready for future compliance <\/span>requirements<\/span> and have business processes fit for the services we <\/span>will deliver. We must understand the skills required and have a plan for securing them.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Develop collaboration models to take Nordic collaboration to the next level: <\/strong>NORDUnet and Nordic NRENs are successful and effective collaborators. Many successful joint initiatives and projects demonstrate that. To have even more impact and be able to act jointly in an agile manner, we will work to further develop our collaboration toolbox. We have agreed and well-understood processes and methods for creating and running joint activities by end-2025. We will work with new and proven collaboration models.<\/p>

Increase organisational maturity to be effective in leveraging strengths: <\/strong>To be effective in utilising existing capabilities to ensure consistency, dependability, and security, and to allow the organisation to manage a larger portfolio, we will review what has served us in the past. We will review legacy hardware and software platforms, develop new processes of initiating and managing internal and joint projects, and integrate compliance management into the daily life of the organisation and its activities.<\/p>

Establish Nordic projects to identify value creation through collaboration: <\/strong>Part of the NORDUnet ambition is to leverage Nordic strength. In 2025 we will address key challenges for NORDUnet and NRENs by establishing more joint Nordic activities that investigate possible collaboration areas such as security, AI, non-data networking, and the EOSC federation.
